One answer to this question is – read the book “More Guns Less Crime” by Dr. John Lotte. Questionnaires that ask if (in the last year) the respondent has used a gun to frighten off an attacker is one example. Another method is a comparison of gun crimes before a law and after a gun law has been created. Yet another is a comparison of gun crimes between similar states (or gun ownership) that have different gun laws (such as legal carry or not). Gun ownership was statistically high in the early part of the 20th century yet few states experienced mass shootings. A steep rise began in the 1960’s. Logic tells us that if the ratio of those who own guns remains unchanged (or diminishes) and yet their misuse increases, something(s) other than gun ownership is responsible. Logic then tells us that a compassionate mind had better start asking questions and seeking answers that relate to (social?) factors other than the availability of guns.

Can Daedal2207 tell us how many killings were deterred and thwarted because good people too have guns? Until such an effort is provided his negative certitudes about the Second Amendment, the NRA, and our Leadership, are nothing other than (possibly) costly slanders.
For instance, if we had evidence that he had read and understood the research presented in “More Guns, Less Crime” by Dr. John Lott, and provided well-reasoned argument as to its not being representative of the real world we might find his opinion worthy of action.
The NRA was founded in the 1860s after the musket volley techniques of the 18th century produced soldiers who couldn’t hit the side of a barn.Its first concern was creating a citizenry that could shoot straight.Its concerns went to promotion of gun based recreation and in the 1970s to gun rights(second amendment stuff)as Federal law struck licensing and sale of firearms.At the moment it is near bankruptcy having had to fire Ollie(Nicaragua Scandal) North as its President and now suing Wayne De La Pierre(Executive VP) for some $900,000, spent on clothing and travel.It acted as a funnel for some $17 million of Russian money into the Trump campaign from a bogus Russian NRA.These were Russian agents interfering with our 2016 election.Can you iimagine Putin tolerating a Russian gun society outside of government?
The good guy with a gun notion is predicated on the identifiability of a “wrongun” and would promote chaos and dangerous adventurism in atmospheres of loosened mores.(e.g.Bars and casinos).In areas where protection by police is questionable to begin with, the profiling practices of police would expose anyone seeking to act as a vigilante to almost certainly being shot.I have some familiarity with guns.rifles,revolvers and one Colt 45.Making sure of the background, not firing on impulse and firing with accuracy are not easily acquired skills and lack thereof accounts for gun owners usually being unable to use their weapons in home invasion scenarios and often being shot with their own weapons.Police across the nation are opposed to good guys with guns intervening in peril situations.Fighting back is the last resort recommended.
Daedal2207 presents some history about the NRA that focuses on questionable motives. It is reasonable to believe that some people acted on their basis. That does not mean that all or even most of NRA activities impacted negatively on society then or today. Nothing written by Daedal2207 alters the fact that the preservation of this power and its responsible use is the fundamental reason for the NRA’s existence.
Not covered here are many forms of deterrence that exist because good people too have a right to possess firearms. For instance, how many times per year are bad guys turned away because a victim only displayed a weapon? How many potentially bad guys chose to be good guys because they decided that the risk of being shot by a victim who possessed a concealed gun was too great? In a monthly NRA publication, a page is devoted to approximately 7 to 10 reports explaining where and how guns were used to prevent the bad guys from doing harm. These are collected monthly from newspapers around the U.S. – women resisting rape – stores resisting robberies – home invasions thwarted – etc. Clearly the power of a gun is often misused. Less clear is deterrence because a crime that did not occur is not reported. Only a good statistical analysis can give us the measure of this truth. A decision not to do this research can only bias our conclusions – possibly with the cost of many lives unnecessarily lost. This choice to be ignorant is not a compassionate form of neglect.
How do you research uncommitted crimes? It’s akin to the dog who fails to bark in the night. N.B. Women who attempt to reclaim justice for unreported rape are usually ignored.
