The Merchant of Mailice & the Ethical Profession

The last week saw a profusion of drab events take place. They involved power relationships between MOM(POTUS) and variations of the world’s oldest profession as well a his relationship(and his followers’) to law) , medicine and the clergy.
Most recent and most remote from MOM was the attempted firing of Patrick Conroy ,catholic chaplain of the house by Paul Ryan ,speaker of the house, for no better reason than the priest’s invocation asking that the welfare of the poor be given primacy in healthcare legislation. The priest rescinded his resignation and Ryan( a poor emulator of MOM) caved in and withdrew his demand.

MOM has been accused of strong arming his former personal physician Bornstein, forcibly removing his files and having prior, dictated his own report to the public while a candidate. In the meantime his Walter Reed assigned pesonal physician has come an apparently deserved cropper as his candidate as VA administrator.
Personal and professional conduct issues were raised as well as his having been dictated to by MOM in POTUS’ health report to the nation.
The array of lawyers and their shaky relationship to truth and advocacy Guliani,Cobb,Cohn,Rhodes etc. with the likes of Dershowitz egging on from a Fox sideline seems endless.Among other things Trump may not pay them.
The purveyors of play for pay seem to have fared a little better, aside from being treated like raw meat and given no credit for their humanity or their brains,MOM seems to have paid and that money trail among others is being followed by Muelller

  1. Response to SB comment 7 May 9:29 am:
I love that clip from “The Great Train robbery”. It displays marvelous talent and style. However, it provides absolutely no evidence that the money motive of Connery’s character is necessarily that of Donald Trump.
SB, riding on Connery’s talent, is claiming that she knows the truth – She knows exactly what motivates our President. Is her high self-esteem (or leap of faith) about the superior quality of her feelings reason enough for a reader to assume that there is no purpose served by considering other possibilities? I have tried to present “reasons” to question both self and others, and do it objectively, with empirical and logical evidence. “Truth” for the scientific mind is a hypothesis, a probability, intended to be tested and constantly adjusted to “best” evidence. What we can honestly claim to “know” is of the essence. An assertion of certitude when there are other possibilities is a lie told to the self. This lie is usually ego-serving, sometimes addictive, and often puts one in conflict with reality.

  2. Mr. Ryan said that he fired the priest because meme embers of the Congress thought that he was not doing a good job.

    1. Dr. Ghali, your attempted defense of the indefensible speaker of the House is acknowledged. Pray tell, how was the chaplain failing in his job as spiritual and moral reminder to such an “august” body? Were his failings greater than MOM’s (open profiteering and hustling from his office) and some members of his cabinet? Somehow Pruitt and Carson come to mind. How would you judge them? Even Fox News is pointing to MOM/POTUS that the stench from the swamp is of his own making. Rather than the priestly collar, the chaplain should wear an air mask to protect him.
      P. S. We appreciate daedal2207’s efforts in keeping us alert and focused. It is obvious that our country has not been disgraced enough by the constant barrage of lies. The emperor has no clothes and his nakedness is blinding. One thing is for sure: MOM has exposed the hypocrisy of our religious values. What values?

      1. We have become inured to the nakedness but the scabrous, poxed skin underlying allows for a number of diagnoses.Given that there is no treatment, our hypocritical religious, political and ethical values stymie disposition.

      2. SB tells us that “It is obvious that our country has not been disgraced enough by the constant barrage of lies.” I agree, but we do not agree about which in society’s vast family of “lies” are most abhorrent. The most disgraceful are propagated by those people blinded with a passionate embrace of false beliefs. Self-deception is a malevolent form of lie that can consume not only the believer but others arrogantly pressured to abide with them. Governments guided by such hands lean to totalitarian. The cure for self-deception consists of regular injections of rational thought based in multi doses of empirical evidence. If you can measure it and others can replicate the measurement you can probably navigate to better places, taking an objective path that nature will not obstruct. If regarding an issue there are many possibilities, and yet others insist there be only one, you logically know that the others’ judgment is faulty. We can also know that those guided by false certitudes are likely to obstruct or conflict with those who are selecting the most rational paths.
Daedal2207 and SB apparently cannot acknowledge that many of their negative judgments about Trump are falsely based (In other words, they are likely navigating with self-deceptions – the most damning of lies). The best evidence in support of Trump would be facts capable of being measured by others (not emotions) that demonstrate that he is making judgments the consequences of which measurably benefit humanity. The following are just a few of the first year’s “achievements”. (The Washington Examiner listed 81.):
        • Increase of the GDP above 3 percent.
        • Creation of over 1.7 million new jobs, cutting unemployment to 3.9 percent.
        • Saw the Dow Jones reach record highs.
        • A rebound in economic confidence to a 17-year high.
        • A new executive order to boost apprenticeships.
        • A move to boost computer sciences in Education Department programs.
        • Prioritizing women-owned businesses for some $500 million in SBA loans.
        • Worked to bring companies back to the U.S., and companies like Toyota, Mazda, Broadcom Limited, and Foxconn announced plans to open U.S. plants.
        • Made enforcement of U.S. trade laws, especially those that involve national security, a priority.
Removed 36 percent more criminal gang members than in fiscal 2016.
Added some 100 new immigration judges.
Justice announced grants of $98 million to fund 802 new cops.
Justice worked with Central American nations to arrest and charge 4,000 MS-13 members.
Homeland rounded up nearly 800 MS-13 members, an 83 percent one-year increase.
Signed three executive orders aimed at cracking down on international criminal organizations.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions created new National Public Safety Partnership, a cooperative initiative with cities to reduce violent crimes.
Trump has nominated (over) 73 federal judges and won his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
Ordered an overhaul to modernize the digital government.
Saw ISIS lose virtually all of its territory.
Pushed for strong action against global outlaw North Korea and its development of nuclear weapons.
NATO increased support for the war in Afghanistan.
Approved a new Iran strategy plan focused on neutralizing the country’s influence in the region.
Ordered missile strikes against a Syrian airbase used in a chemical weapons attack.
Ordered new sanctions on the dictatorship in Venezuela.
Conducted a historic 12-day trip through Asia, winning new cooperative deals. On the trip, he attended three regional summits to promote American interests.
Traveled to Poland and on to Germany for the G-20 meeting where he pushed again for funding of women entrepreneurs.

        1. The length of DS’ response and the concatenation of fact, fiction, intention, credit for trends well underway etc. is more indicative of desperation than belief. The extent of the duping of America including MOM’s faithful, is about to become evident. The next month or two will be particularly dangerous because riot and war( domestic and foreign) in the name of the last refuge of a tyrant, patriotism may be resorted to.Peace Talks? Ya gotta be kidding ! At best surrendering principle and allies for ” ratings ” while being maximally manipulated is what’s in the offing.Daedal2207

Thank you, DS. Rather than adding to the loquacious content of self-mesmerizing or self-deception, I offer the following explanation of the president’s core: https://youtu.be/zMNUcNokvkU

    2. Why then was the “firing “rescinded when Father Conway resisted? “Lyin Ryan” must have known all along that his charts and health care “calculus” was a sham and interpreted the priest’s invocation as his being called out !

    1. Reply to Daedal2207 comment dated 7 May 9:01 am:
I agree with Daedal2207 that we are living through a particularly dangerous period. I disagree as to which of us is being duped.
Domestically the greater danger to our healthiest future is that of the left’s totalitarianism. It consists of a too powerful government made up of elites righteously dictating how we are supposed to feel, and not protecting each individual’s right to freedoms of speech and thought.
Internationally too, we are challenged with conflicting visions as to how people should be allowed to live. This competition is not only that of economic systems, it includes individual and religious forms of despotism. The nature of several of our enemies is such that there is not enough time to educate to a shared wisdom as regards live and let live. Only two options exist. We either capitulate or fight. Assuming that we believe that the U.S.A. is better for the human future than suffering extortions by a Kim Jon Un, or an Islamic Caliphate, communicating both military power and a willingness to fight becomes the more probable path to a meaningful peace. And yes, “peace talks” are where this war-deterring communication can be clarified.
